Lactation support

WHat is an IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding/chestfeeding. IBCLCs are certified and regulated by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.

I am an IBCLC (L-164398) licensed in the state of Oregon (LC-10206170). I completed my Human Lactation education and certification through the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, including clinical training at Salem Pediatric Clinic, Legacy Health, and Hillsboro Pediatric Clinic. Before sitting for the board exam in 2019, I completed 100+ hours of lactation-specific coursework and nearly 400 hours of directly supervised lactation clinical practice. I am trained to help you prepare before giving birth, in the early weeks postpartum, and if/when issues arise along the way.

Continuing education is an important piece of my certification and licensure. I have pursued additional training in the following areas:

Tongue and Lip Tie Assessment and Care

Improving Low Milk Supply

Prenatal Breast Examination

Breastfeeding in Emergencies and Re-lactation

Inclusive Care for LGBTQIA Families

Human Milk Donation and Milk Banking

Herbal Support in Lactation

Infant Craniosacral Therapy

what to expect…

Congratulations on your new baby! My interest is to provide compassionate support and evidence-based care to help you navigate your breastfeeding experience and develop a plan that meets your definition of success. As a board certified lactation consultant, I am able to help you manage breastfeeding issues, from common to complex. Yes, breastfeeding is NATURAL, but it is also LEARNED and may require guidance. We will work together to foster a healthy feeding relationship for you and your baby.

An in-home lactation consult may include:

  • 60 to 90 minute visit

  • complete review of maternal/family health history and birth story

  • examination of mother’s breasts and nipples

  • assessment of postpartum mood disorders and emotional state of family

  • discussion of your current feeding situation, including your goals and needs

  • infant weight (pre- and post- feed) with hospital grade scale to determine milk transfer

  • observation of feeding, with suggestions for latch and position adjustments as needed

  • assessment of infant oral-motor, tongue and suck function

  • recommendation for use and guidance with feeding tools (i.e. nipple shield or pump), including flange sizing

  • anticipatory guidance while reviewing ALL of your questions and concerns

  • discussion of craniosacral therapy and suggestion for body work

  • written care plan reviewed with family and report sent to baby’s (and mother’s if needed) health care providers

  • follow up support via phone/email for up to one week

When to seek support from an IBCLC:

  • you had difficulty feeding a previous child

  • you have nipple or breast pain/damage and/or overall breast concerns (engorgement, plugged ducts, etc.)

  • you need help with latch and/or positioning to improve maternal comfort

  • you or another provider have concerns about your baby’s weight

  • your baby is sleepy or jaundice

  • you want someone to assess for tongue/lip tie

  • you are worried about your milk supply

  • you are going back to work and want to continue to breastfeed/pump
